This report provides a review of the current knowledge relating to the preparation of sheep for export from southern ports in the Australian winter months, including summarising relevant industry statistics, RD&E, government mortality event investigations and regulatory provisions. The report also summaries possible areas where future research could be considered to support further development and refinement of the preparation and risk management strategies for sheep exports in this period. In making its recommendations and suggestions for research, the authors warn against making prescriptive changes to the ASEL or making changes unless there is unequivocal evidence that they will deliver measurable animal welfare and health benefits.
