Australia’s livestock export industry has today expressed deep sadness for the tragic loss of human and animal life following the sinking of the Danny FII vessel transporting Uruguayan livestock off the coast of Lebanon.
In light of this tragedy, LiveCorp CEO Cameron Hall has reassured Australians that the Australian livestock export industry is strictly regulated by the Australian Government and works to the highest standards anywhere in the world.
“Australia operates under very strict regulations and uses only the best vessels to export our livestock,” he said.
Regulation of the Australian industry includes full and thorough implementation of international maritime standards for vessels, and the setting and enforcement of strict standards for the management and export of livestock through the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock.
These strict standards and the high level of care provided to Australian livestock onboard vessels means that over 99 per cent of all Australian livestock arrive fit and healthy at their destination.
Mr Hall confirmed that the Danny FII has not transported Australian livestock for many years because it did not comply with Australia’s high standards.
“Australia’s presence in the trade continues to set a global benchmark for livestock exports and we are committed to continuous improvements to our world leading industry,” he said.
